Unexpected

Life is unexpected. That's the best we can do. Even with a strong faith in my Savior Jesus, sometimes life just throws things at you that are unexpected and just plain hurt. That was the case yesterday when my sister called to tell me my cousin, Randy Stubblefield had been killed in a vehicle accident. SO unexpected and so difficult.

He was the surviving member of my aunt and uncle, Nona and Wm (Stub) Stubblefield's family. His mom had passed years ago and then his older brother, Terry, was killed in a plane crash. His father died a few years ago. After suffering a tragic motorcycle crash in 2001 he had been on disability. My sister was named as his guardian, helping him with such difficult things as doing his finances.

He had a part-time job working as a sub-contractor for a mail route, something I can identify with as I do the same, along with my freelance writing. He seemed content, if not happy. My sis said she had numerous conversations with him about his personal beliefs and things that he kept near and dear to his heart. Randy was an introvert.

But he was a sweet cousin and had a lot of joy to share when you were around him. And now, unexpectedly, he is gone.

Did I care enough? Did I share enough? I'm talking about my love for the Lord and my expectation of where I will be someday, due to my belief in God's saving grace and the relationship I have with Him. Did Randy have that? I have to admit, that I don't know. Even though we were first cousins, I had never sat down with him to talk about what he believed and where he expected to be should something like yesterday's accident happen.

So now, the only thing I can do is pray for the rest of my family, his extended family, and those who will be involved in taking care of the stuff that is left behind. I'll be praying for my sister, who was his POA and is the executor of his estate. Praying for his aunts and cousins and all who will gather soon to say goodbye.

And I can take those opportunities given to me each day, to share God's love. So that when those unexpected things happen, people will be prepared.
